Deductible
Definition
The amount you pay out-of-pocket for healthcare services before your insurance starts covering costs. For example, with a $2,000 deductible, you pay the first $2,000 of medical bills each year yourself.
Why It Matters
Your deductible resets annually (usually January 1). Knowing how much of your deductible you've met helps you plan medical procedures — scheduling a surgery in December after meeting your deductible saves thousands vs. waiting until January.
